A career as a Mechanical Engineer offers many challenges and many rewards. A Mechanical Engine is responsible for researching and developing machines, tools and various mechanical devices and components. Examples of the types of projects a Mechanical Engineer might work on would include the design, planning and development of machines and equipment ranging from jet engines to minute instruments used in medicine and surgery.

A big advantage in choosing Mechanical Engineering as a career is that the specialty offers a fairly general and all purpose engineering degree which opens the door to numerous companies, and employment opportunities across the nation. Your chances of finding employment as a mechanical engineer are high due to the nature of the work and the fact that it encompasses so many different possibilities. However, you will need to gain a bachelor's degree or associates in mechanical engineering from an accredited college or university in order to have the best chances of gaining employment in this field.

The personal gratification and rewards of a career as a Mechanical Engineer are practically unlimited. If you enjoy solving complex problems, working with your hands, and coming up with "outside-of-the-box" solutions, then a Mechanical Engineer may be the occupation for you.

As an ME, you will require a solid background in science fundamentals, and math. This prerequisite knowledge is necessary to build the firm foundation you will need to solve complex problems for society, and to create and build mechanical devices. You will apply this knowledge to create practical, useful solutions that the rest of us can use.

Diversity is the key with a degree in mechanical engineering; providing you with the opportunity for work in a variety of settings from a laboratory or an outdoor construction site. Remember, nearly every mechanical device was created by a mechanical engineer so the possibilities for employment are virtually endless! Because Mechanical Engineering is so challenging, it is also extremely rewarding, offering above average pay depending on location and specialty. The top 10% of all engineers earn more than $90,000. Mechanical engineers out of college typically earn a starting salary of $40,000+.
