Sales Manager Careers

What makes a good Sales Manager is someone who can not only train, but someone who can give good direction and excellent supervision as well to all the sales staff. A Sales Manager can organize all the details of the sales department by establishing sales areas, quotas for the staff and individual goals for each worker.

The Sales Manager will have a good grasp of the general market and this will help to determine the wants and needs of their customers. The Sales Manager knows exactly what the volume of sales will be and what the pricing should be to help meet the goals the company has set out.

The individual duties of the Sales Manager are different depending on the company they are working for. Sales Managers usually do the hiring and the training and are responsible for all sales workers. Some larger companies hire specialized managers to perform the duties of sales training. All companies have their Sales Managers assign sales regions to the staff and they are also responsible for evaluating the workers performance. The Sales Manager is a representative of the company at trade shows and conventions where they promote the products of the companies they work for. Others study customer wants and needs and oversee the research and the development of products. Some Sales Managers even oversee the budget of the products.

A company usually hires a Sales Manager because there are a great number of sales people working for the company. In addition to having a staff of sales people, some companies also have independent companies market their products or services. These independent companies are jobbers, dealers or distributors and the Sales Manager works very closely with the sales departments of these independent companies. Other Sales Managers will provide insight and direction to the sales staff of wholesalers and some retailers who are marketing the products of their employers.

The company size usually determines the responsibility of the Sales Manager job. Some companies may only have one Sales Manager, while a large corporation may have many, who are in charge of different areas of the sales operations. There is usually a general manager for different geographic areas within the larger company.
