Fraud is always a worrying topic when it comes to credit cards. Most of us use our credit cards now and then - sometimes on a daily basis - and it is important to protect them as much as we can.
But with criminals intent on trying to steal our card details to make money from them, it is vital to be vigilant to make sure you don't fall prey to credit card fraud yourself. Your cards will be protected against them being used for fraudulent purposes, but this doesn't remove all responsibility from you.
Never let your card go out of your sight, no matter where you might be. If you want to pay for a bill in a restaurant you should always go with the server to pay it. They should not take the card out of your sight. Most places now have cordless payment terminals so you will pay at your table, but be vigilant for anything out of the ordinary.
It also pays to check your credit card bills thoroughly whenever they come through the mail. If you spot anything on there that doesn't relate to what you have spent yourself, make sure you call the company immediately to tell them about it. You should not be liable for any incorrect or fraudulent charges made to your card, but you do need to alert them as soon as possible so you can put a stop to it.
Be alert whenever you are spending money online as well. Always make sure the usual security measures are in place. Watch for the padlock symbol and the https:// which shows the site is secure. If you are in any doubt at all, don't use the site. There are criminals who specialise in trying to get money from people online. Make sure you don't fall victim to them.
Being alert is the most important thing of all. Even if you are careful with your card details you aren't completely immune to being duped by other people. Having protection is a good thing, but you should make sure as far as possible that you will never need it. |
