Key corp. was started in 1994 by the society corp. of Cleveland. By the end of 2008, it is stated that out of all the banks based in Cleveland, key bank was the last surviving bank. The roots of Key bank go back until 1825 and 1849, Commercial bank of Albany, NY and the Cleveland’s society for savings respectively. The society corp. was started in 1849 by Samuel H Mather. It was initially a mutual savings bank and was called Cleveland’s society for savings. Cleveland’s first skyscraper was the society for savings and this was in 1867. It was ten storeys’s tall and was in a public square too. However, the bank was absolutely conservative even though it had erected the tallest skyscraper of that time and too in between big cities like Chicago and New York.Â
In between the years, 1970 and 1980 Key bank showed tremendous growth however, it largely continued to remain in New York bank. During the early, 1990’s many banks were affected due to recession but key bank managed to make it through bad times also as it had ample capital. By 1993, Key bank became an extremely profitable bank and this was mainly because of its minimal technology and rural strategy.Â
