Payment-in-Kind Security - Payment-in-Kind Security is a relatively unusual type of security that allows the issuer of record to pay the investor with addition stock shares in lieu of payment in currency as is expected. The payments in the form of stocks and bonds cause cash flow problems for investors who are then obligated to pay the income taxes on the market value of the additional received securities. These securities are the cause of leveraged securities. A preferred stock and bond payment comes in the form of additional stocks and bonds. Payment in securities can hurt investors, but it is the common practice.
