1096 Tax Form

The form 1096 is used by the IRS to determine the status of any business that has issued the following forms in their tax return submissions. The forms1098, 1099, 5498 or the W2-G. Filling this form should not pose any challenges to any body as it has straight forward simple steps to follow systematically.

The first and most important step to consider before you fill any form 1096 is whether you have submitted any of the above named forms. It should be worth knowing that the form 1099-MISCs are used to declare any payments of $600 and above for variable reasons such as rent, contracted workers and the payments of any services offered by individuals or professional. It is also necessary to track any interest payments received from mortgages and real estate payments or in situations where you paid for a debt and later cancelled the payment fro one reason or another. In all these cases, you would be required to fill one of the forms 1099s, 5498s, 1098s or the W2-Gs.

It is wise to take several forms 1096 as you may need to use many of them depending on the number of issues you have to file for. This is because each different case is filled on a separate form 1096 and therefore if you have several reports, you must have the same number of form1096s to submit for each case.

What details does the form 1096 require?

The from 1096 requires you to fill allot of personal information regarding your identification such as phone number, address, your name and either of the following; your employer identification number or social security number. The social security number can serve even if you happen not to have an employer identification number.

Away from your personal details, you will then be required to check the box at the bottom to indicate what form you are applying this for. It is mandatory to only check one box as you can only fill the same forms on the 1096 form. This is o say that if you have to fill the formk1096 in relation to forms 1099 and 1098, you must only check one of this in each form. However, if the forms 1099 or 1098 are more than one to fill for, you can write their number at the bottom of the form 1096.

Eventually once you have filled up all the amounts for which you may have withheld federal taxes and worked out the total amounts of which you should enter at the end of the column, you must sign the document accordingly by putting your name and the particular date before mailing. Incase you do not have the address to the IRS; turn to the left page of the form 1096 and you will find them there.
