Filing Income Taxes

The IRS web site, as can be expected, has a library of information concerning assistance with the preparation of taxes and includes some free resources for the preparation of taxes. To begin the voluntary program of income tax assistance (VITA) and the tax counseling services for elderly programs (TCE) help taxpayers of low income who qualify.

The volunteers help with special appropriations, such as the child tax credits and credits for elderly. The majority of the sites will also help with filing electronically (E-filing). The e-file program allows taxpayers to receive their return in as little as half the time of paper filed returns, and if the taxpayer chooses direct deposit, the wait can be even less.

The VITA program offers free tax assistance to households and individuals of moderate to low income (generally, $49.000 and below) who cannot prepare their own income tax returns or need the assistance with e-filing. There are various non-profit organizations who finance the certified volunteers who have received formal training to help prepare basic income tax returns in communities throughout the country. Some of the places for VITA change, but some common locations include centers of the community and vicinity, libraries, schools, shopping centers, and other convenient places.

Those more than 60 years of age can receive free assistance with filing income taxes from the TCE program. These too are qualified volunteers who specialize in helping elderly citizens prepare tax returns. The non-profit organizations which receive concessions of the IRS often provide the volunteers, and those volunteers are usually retired tax professionals.

Armed forces including the army, the Air Force, the navy, marines, and the coast guard can turn to the AFTC for assistance. The AFTC is used as principal conduit with the IRS, military personnel and their families to supervise and execute tax preparation assistance around the world.

By choosing the direct deposit the majority of service members who file electronically in the AFTC centers can receive their refund in as little as a week. This effort makes sure that service members can receive the best income tax help from specialists in their kind of income tax returns.
